Most buyers new to sourcing cotton apparel focus on style, color, and price first, and treat GSM as a technical afterthought if they think about it at all. That's backwards. GSM is one of the few objective, comparable numbers you have before a sample even arrives, and it tells you more about how a garment will actually perform than almost anything else on a spec sheet.
What GSM actually measures. It's the weight of the fabric per square meter — literally how much material is packed into a given area. Lower GSM means a thinner, lighter fabric; higher GSM means a denser, heavier one. Neither is universally "better" — it depends on the product and market. A summer t-shirt for a hot climate might reasonably sit around 160–180 GSM for breathability, while a premium hoodie might run 280–320 GSM for structure and warmth. The mistake isn't picking a particular GSM — it's not knowing what you're getting and being surprised when a "premium" garment feels thin in hand.
Why low-GSM fabric causes problems downstream. Anything meaningfully below 160 GSM in a basic tee tends to show its weaknesses fast — it becomes semi-transparent under certain lighting, it loses shape after a handful of washes, and it develops that "worn thin" look much sooner than a heavier fabric would. If you're building a retail line and want repeat customers, garments that degrade visibly within a few months create returns and damage the brand more than the unit cost savings are worth.
Why 180–220 GSM is a reasonable default range. This band holds structure well, resists the fabric going see-through, and survives a normal wash cycle without significant pilling or thinning — while still staying breathable enough for daily wear across most climates. It's not a hard rule, but it's a sensible starting point for a buyer who hasn't sourced apparel before and wants a fabric weight that won't embarrass them.
Beyond GSM — the other checks worth doing on a sample. Stretch the fabric gently in both directions; a good cotton knit should recover its shape rather than staying stretched out. Check the stitching at stress points — collar seams, underarms, hem — since that's where cheap construction fails first, regardless of how good the fabric itself is. Wash the sample once before final approval if you can; some fabrics that feel great off the roll shrink or lose color noticeably after a single wash, and that's exactly the kind of surprise you want to catch before a bulk order, not after.
How we approach this. We quote GSM plainly on every cotton product, and we're comfortable walking a buyer through the actual tradeoffs between a 180 GSM and a 240 GSM option for their specific market rather than just pushing whichever is cheaper for us to produce. A buyer who understands GSM going in makes better sourcing decisions, and that makes for a better long-term relationship on our end too.
